The swinging 1960s saw the appearance of the first villa and townhouse complexes in Sydney. Here is one for Karingal at Lane Cove dating back to 1971.

I’m now 60 years old… I was 8 years old when we bought number 27 in the complex. We were the second Town House sold at the time… it was very cutting-edge and ahead of its time. White bricks with mission brown trim, it was like a village with Gas-lit streets with the pool in the middle of the complex. I used to wash Tony Roach’s car for free tennis balls. We had Sir Geoffrey Daniels, the head of the ABC at the time there, Don Burrows and a trove of other eclectic people.
