Remember This? Surfing at Ramsgate (1965)

Lady Robinsons Beach (Brighton Beach, as the locals like to call it) runs along the western shore of Botany Bay from Kyeemagh down to Sans Souci.

It is a beach that is not normally associated with surfing but in 1965, during a winter storm, the waves pounding the beach were high enough for surfers to take advantage of it.

Tbe stretch of beach at Ramsgate had become eroded due to the extensions of the north-south runway into Botany Bay and is believed to have been the reason behind the big waves. It was one of several storms that would erode the beachfront during the 1960's.

1992: Coles commences 24 hour trading

The situation with COVID-19 has led to a relaxation of trading laws for supermarkets to allow for shoppers to purchase necessities for the home.

But Supermarkets have had the right to trade 24 hours for nearly three decades. Coles took the initiative in 1992 when their supermarkets at Lindfield and Ramsgate began offering 24 hour trading. It lasted for much of the 1990's. This was part of the deregulation of shopping hours, which benefited supermarkets more than other retailers. They could open early and trade late.

Busier supermarkets usually trade 6am-midnight each day of the week.

Below is an article from The Daily Telegraph Mirror in 1992.

Property Advert of the Week: Richelieu, Ramsgate (1965)

This weeks property advertisement takes us to Ramsgate where you could buy units in The Richelieu apartment complex in Florence Street. For 4750 pounds ($9500), you could have your own unit within a short walk of the shops and Lady Robinsons Beach. According to the RBA Inflation Calculator, that is the equivalent of $117 000 today.

Property Advert of the Week: Kimberley Court Ramsgate (1970)

This week's advert is for a three storey walk-up apartment complex known as Kimberley Court at Sans Souci. The advertisement does list as being at Ramsgate, but today it is in the suburb of Sans Souci.

I do walk past the complex once a week and it's still there. The units started at $14 750 which according to the RBA Inflation Calculator would be about $156 000 in today's money. I did some research to see how much a unit would sell for. In December last year, one apartment sold for $547 000.
