Property Advert of the Week: Century Green by Clarendon, Lidcombe (2000)

Below is a newspaper advertisement from 2000 to promote the Century Green estate by Clarendon Homes. The estate is located on the site of the former Lidcombe Hospital and the Media Centre used for the 2000 Olympic Games. Four bedroom townhouses were on sale from $290 000 and 2 Storey Homes from $440 000.

Property Advert of the Week: Ambassador Apartments, Auburn (1993)

Below is a 1993 newspaper advertisement promoting the sale of studio apartments in "The Ambassador Apartments" in Auburn. Prices started from just $59 000.

Property Advert of the Week: Wimbeldon Estate, Greystanes (1966)

Below is a 1966 newspaper advertisement promoting the Wimbeldon Estate at Greystanes, though it is advertised as Merrylands. Going by the map featured in the advertisement, the estate encompasses Bromwich Street, Hopman Street (part of) and Sedgman Street. The school featured in the map is Greystanes Public School.

Property Advert of the Week: Mariners Cove at Sydney Olympic Park (2000)

One of the first developments at what is now known as Wentworth Point was Mariners Cove. Back in 2000, the price of a three or four bedrooom unit cost just $475 000.

1998: Newington is unveiled

In 1998, the suburb of Newington was launched by NSW Premier Bob Carr. The suburb was built to act as the Olympic Village as part of Sydney hosting the 2000 Olympic Games and is reflected by the names given to streets within the suburb.

10 000 Olympic Athletes and officals lived in the village during the 2000 Olympic Games. Following the Olympic Games, they were converted into private housing. 

Around half of the 2000 dwellings in Newington were built prior to the Olympic Games. Around 250 dwellings were sold to the public while around 870 dwellings were used for the Olympic Games. The remaining dwellings (Around 1000) were built after the Olympic Games.

Newington was developed by Lend Lease and Mirvac. 

Currently, the suburb is home to around 5800 people (2016 Census).

Property Advert of the Week: Apartments for sale at Newington (2000)

Back in 2000, an apartment at Newington could cost you as little as $325 000. The marketing slogan was "There'll be no draggin you off the balcony". Since 2000, the price of units has doubled with realestate.com.au reporting that the average unit sells for $680 000. Maybe you'll have to drag them off the balcony if you want really a unit.
